Master Classes for Educators

For physical education teachers, arts, dance, choir and musical theater directors, we offer a single session in-service that provides these professionals the tools to create a week’s Swing Dancing or Lindy Hop curriculum.

Workshop Content

This class will deliver the tools to teach the basic rhythm and turns of 6-Count, East Coast Swing, including drills for correctly leading and following the movement. The educators are encouraged to learn both roles (lead and follow) in order to teach these units solo or with the help of student volunteers. As well as just teaching the dance, we will share with them some of the historical aspects of this dance and how to incorporate them into the dance lesson.

Timeline

0:00 – 0:05: Group Warm Up to safely bring up heart rates and stretch core muscles used in Lindy Hop.

0:05 – 0:30: Fundamentals and teaching tools for the basic footwork and lead/follow

0:30 – 0:60: Underarm Turn Module – including “traffic pattern”, footwork, common mistakes and instruction for corrections, practice pattern to music

0:60 – 1:30: Application of Under Turn module to several additional turns, including incorporation with of previous moves into a practice pattern to music.

1:30 – 2:00: Role Reversal to ensure instructors can teach the Lead and Follow roles

2:00 – 2:30: Lindy Hop and Jazz History and Q&A for age specific or department specific applications

Additional Resource: Instructional DVD

As additional as resource, we also have an instructional DVD, Introduction to 6-Count Swing, that includes the In-Service material along with more advanced steps. The DVD details both roles and suggests practice patterns to use in class.

Together, the In-Service and DVD will give the teachers the knowledge to skillfully teach a Swing Dancing unit and/or incorporate swing choreography into a school productions.
